Miruna Cojanu (b. 1980) is a contemporary Romanian painter working primarily in oil on canvas and oil on paper mounted on canvas. Alongside her artistic practice, she is currently studying Art History and Theory at the National University of Arts in Bucharest (UNArte), an academic experience that continues to enrich and expand her artistic practice.
Her work explores femininity, memory, vulnerability, and the emotional landscapes that shape our inner lives. Through figurative painting, she creates intimate spaces where portraiture becomes less a representation of identity and more an invitation to emotional reflection.
Rather than telling explicit stories, her paintings evoke emotional states, allowing viewers to recognize fragments of their own experiences within each image. Rooted in quiet moments that often remain unseen—the memories we revisit, the emotions we carry, and the inner conversations that accompany us before we step back into the world—her work invites contemplation, empathy, and presence.
While her earlier works were distinguished by vivid decorative backgrounds inspired by vintage textiles and traditional patterns, her recent practice has evolved toward increasingly restrained compositions in which the human figure, light, and color become the primary emotional language. Across these different bodies of work, Cojanu remains interested in the relationship between strength and vulnerability, intimacy and distance, presence and absence.
In 2026, she began developing The Green Room, an ongoing body of work inspired by the theatrical space where actors wait before entering the stage. Conceived as a metaphor for the inner room each of us inhabits, the series reflects on memory, longing, love, hope, disappointment, and the emotional rituals through which we prepare ourselves to face the world. The stage becomes life itself, while the actor becomes a metaphor for each of us.
Miruna Cojanu has presented four solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions and international art fairs in Romania, France, Germany, Italy, and Greece. Her work has been exhibited at Kulterra Gallery in Bucharest, Musée Masséna in Nice, and the MOBU International Art Fair, and is held in private collections in Europe and the United States.
